Se celebró una nueva edición de los MTV Video Music Awards, en Nueva York y bajo las medidas de seguridad pertinentes por la pandemia. Las actuaciones tuvieron que realizarse desde diferentes puntos de la ciudad, unas en directo, otras playback, pero por lo menos se celebraron los premios. La gran ganadora fue Lady Gaga que se llevó 5 premios, incluido el nuevo Tricon Award.
BTS y Ariana Grande se llevaron 4, pero The Weeknd rascó el mayor premio, el de vídeo del año por Blinding Lights, canción que interpretó en la azotea de un rascacielos, en la actuación más importante de la noche, justo la que abría la gala.
Keke Palmer intentó dar ritmo a una gala que no consiguió sacarse del todo la imagen de producto enlatado por las limitaciones. La gala estuvo dedicada al actor Chadwick Boseman que falleció de cáncer apenas un par de días antes.
Además actuaron DaBaby, Miley Cyrus, que recreó su famosa bola de Wrecking ball, pero ahora en una discoteca en su Midnight sky, Maluma que se llevó el premio latino y cantó Hawái, una de las canciones de moda. También BTS con Dynamite, su primer single enteramente en inglés y que rentabilizaron enormente los premios por votación, no en vano tienen con diferencia el fandom más fuerte que hay actualmente en el mundo.
Lady Gaga y Ariana Grande interpretaron Rain on me, dentro del medley de la cantante con Chromatica, que incluía además 911 y Stupid love. En la pre gala estuvo una de las actuaciones de la noche, la de Lewis Capaldi con Before you go.
